Litter picking

A group of residents help keep our area looking nice by picking up litter. Adam, Clare, Iqbal, James, Katherine, Liz, Naomi, Sam, Sarge, and others regularly head to Thomas Gamuel Park armed with grabbers and sacks for collecting the rubbish they see. It’s mostly food wrappers and drink bottles lurking in verges. The council road sweeper does it too of course but sadly there’s always more to find.

They like looking back on the grass and flower beds to see the huge difference they have had on making it a nice place to want to be in. Others notice it too and are very grateful for their efforts. It makes the volunteers feel really worthwhile.

But it shouldn’t be necessary; for everyone’s sake please put anything you don’t need in a park, street or home bin.

If you would like to join in with the litter picking, contact us or come and say hello one day. If you can’t bring your own grabber and sack we should be able to lend you one, along with a volunteer tabbard! There’s a WhatsApp group to coordinate it too.

While you can go litter picking at any time, the team usually go at 11am on the first Sunday of the month. This is when the volunteer gardeners are also around and the pop-up cafe is open. The reward of a free tea there afterwards is very nice!
